When diagnosed very young, ADHD can sometimes be seen as very restless children in need of “recess” or playground activity as we call it in the UK.
America has a much shorter “recess time” than we do in the UK – particularly in Middle School – and one occupational therapist here suggests that this could be causing the spike in ADHD diagnoses here. If these children were allowed to move around more, they wouldn’t be such “fidgets” in class.
Certainly it is alarming to see that map of America with the deep patches of blue where ADHD diagnoses are as high as 11% according to the Center for Diseases in some parts of the US.
